The Heng Long Sherman 3898 (1/16 scale) is a feature-rich RC battle tank designed for hobbyists and scale war gamers. With its 2.4 GHz radio system, smoking exhaust, realistic sound, BB-firing cannon, and optional infrared combat, it offers highly immersive battlefield play out of the box.

Mobility & Chassis

This tank has independent torsion-bar suspension and twin electric motors driving each track, giving it solid off-road capability and a top speed of around 15 km/h under power. Thanks to its scale toughness and realistic chassis geometry, it can handle uneven terrain while maintaining stability.

Firepower & Combat Features

The Sherman model is equipped with a BB-firing mechanism using 6 mm pellets, delivering a firing range in the ballpark of 20–25 m. Each shot is accompanied by hull recoil that simulates real tank cannon behavior — though note, the recoil is of the hull, not barrel. For team battles, the infrared combat system allows multiple Heng Long tanks to engage in IR warfare.

Sound & Smoke Effects

Realism is amplified by a built-in smoke generator that emits non-toxic white smoke to mimic engine exhaust. The faster the tank moves, the denser the smoke becomes — but it requires periodic drops of smoke fluid to function. Simulated audio includes engine start, idle, acceleration, turret rotation, and firing sounds, all routed through the main board.

Turret & Gun Control

The turret can rotate up to 320°, allowing strategic aiming, while the cannon elevates and depresses by roughly 30°. Despite being called “upgraded,” some versions may have plastic tracks or gearbox — but the model supports optional metal tracks and gears for those who want more durability.

Radio & Controls

The 2.4 GHz third-generation remote gives full proportional control: forward/reverse, left/right track steering, turret rotation, gun elevation, and combat functions. That radio frequency also supports multi-tank IR combat sessions without interference.

Battery & Operating Time

Powered by a 7.4 V 1800 mAh Li-ion (or Li-Po) battery, the Sherman can operate for about 20–30 minutes, depending on usage and whether you’re using smoke or firing frequently. Charging takes around 2 hours via the included USB charger.

Build Quality & Materials

Depending on the variant, this model uses a mix of metal and plastic: standard versions include plastic components but Heng Long also offers upgraded versions with metal tracks, steel gearboxes, sprockets, road wheels, and return rollers. The upgraded or “professional” versions are more durable and better suited for frequent or outdoor use.

User Feedback & Real-World Use

RC tank enthusiasts generally praise the Sherman 3898 for its versatility and value. Many highlight how well the smoke and sound system simulate real tank behavior. However, some recommend upgrading to metal tracks and a stronger gearbox for longevity, especially if you plan to battle or operate frequently. Durability of plastic components—like tracks—can be a concern, but replacement parts are widely available.

Special Notes

The package often includes the tank, 2.4 GHz transmitter, 7.4 V battery, USB charger, and a set of BB pellets. Note that smoke fluid is usually not included, so you’ll need to purchase that separately. Also, consider using protective eyewear when firing BBs.
